How to be an EMDR therapist?

Different EMDR Associations in the world have their own qualifications for training in EMDR. They are guided mostly by their own EMDR Associations. Here in Sri Lanka we abide by the guidelines set by the EMDR ASIA Association.

Thus, the eligibility requirements for EMDR training in Sri Lanka as follows:

  1. Qualifying Mental Health Clinicians must have a Bachelors or Master's degree in the mental health field (Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Psychology, Psychotherapy, Psychiatry, Psychiatric social work,) or related mental health discipline considered appropriate by EMDR ASIA Association
  2. Mental Health Clinicians who have a Master's degree in one of the following fields must submit their graduate transcript to the Trainers to determine their eligibility: Art Therapy, Christian/Pastoral Counseling, Drug/Alcohol Counseling, and Music Therapy.

Sri Lanka EMDR Association reserves the right to refuse those individuals who do not meet the required guidelines for consideration.

Training

Participants in the EMDR trainings will have an opportunity to learn the theory behind EMDR Therapy. They will be able to practice in small groups with direct observation and constructive feedback from highly skilled EMDR trained clinicians. These experiential trainings will consist of lectures, live and videotaped demonstrations and supervised practice. Participants will learn a broad spectrum of EMDR therapy applications sufficient to effectively treat the therapeutic needs of a wide range of clients and issues.
